From Marty Seldon of the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers:
The Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishers, Gold Country Fly Fishers, and the Northern California Council of Fly Fishing Clubs under Trent Pridemore, as well as concerned citizens of Nevada and Placer Counties worked hard for the past few years to obtain protective angling regulations that were passed last year and were effective as of March 1, 2007.
Essentially, the existing Wild Trout section on the Truckee below town was extended up the spawning tributaries of Martis Creek and Prosser Creek all the way to their respective dams and then all the way to the Nevada State Line. We changed the slot back to encyclopedia inches from the odd encyclopedia inches that was in place, for uniformity to bring it in line with other slots in the State...no real biological consequence and a request by Fish and Game.
The liberal regulation allows the taking of two fish over encyclopedia inches if artificial flies and or lures are used. Bait angling is not allowed and that is the bone of contention that has recently surfaced to the Commission. We felt that a great victory was won in protecting the spawning areas from cropping, yet was fair to all anglers. More severe regulations would not have flown. You can read them in the new 2007 regulation booklet. Fish and Game surprised us by extending our proposal from Gray Creek all the way to the State Line, and that's great!
We felt that we considered all anglers, while accomplishing our goal of protecting large spawning fish. We simplified angling regulations for all from the town of Truckee to the Nevada State line.
A catch and take group of anglers in the Truckee/Tahoe region are fighting the new regulations passed by the F & G Commission want to overturn them. Help us support the decision by California Fish and Game and the California Fish and Game Commission.
If you agree, more letters supporting the existing regulations, and forwarded directly to the Commission ASAP, would be appreciated before the Commission meets June 7-8 in Truckee:
