Catching Shad on top in the PM on caddis dies is catching on in Sacramento on the Lower American River.

This is best late season, July/August, in the upper reaches from Goethe Park upstream to the Nimbus Dam.

Jeff Putnam has been promoting this for the past few years now.

It helps if you have a calm evening. You can do this the last hour of light in the tail-outs.

Have a 6 weight rod, floating line, tapered leader to 4x and a #12 Elk Hair Caddis.

You can cast straight out with no mend and let it skate downstream and swing in below you.

Upper Sunrise is a popular place above the island.

It might work on any Shad river late season at sunset.

Say Hey Bill,
I can recall doing some of this waaaaaaay back when (15-20 yrs????). People looked at us like we were nuts! Under the right conditions the caddis work like a charm. I know Jeff is putting in the time to refine the approach. He's a smart and gifted angler. Great to see it happening.
Cheers, Ken
