Hi Folks,
I will be going to Clear Lake next week. I have never gone after crappie with a fly rod. I would appreciate any info. It is a huge lake so where does one start? Methods ? Fly patterns ? The whole bit.
I won't be using my regular boat , just a 10 pontoon boat. Thanks for the help in advance. Mike
First thing is to remember that crappie are schooling fish that like cover. If they have moved into the shallows to spawn, you will find them in weed beds and around things like docks that offer some overhad protection.
I haven't fished Clear Lake for a long time, but as I remember, it has many, many private docks. I'd fish those and look for crappie there first.
If you have a depth finder, a school of crappie often resembles a Christmas tree turned upside down. the more aggressive fish will be the most shallow ones in this inverted tree.
Fly patterns can be most kinds of small streamers. Crappie readily take a fly that is about 1 inch or so long, and a Woolly Bugger works well. Try fishing one on the tip and one on a dropper, using different colors until you discover which the crapie like best.
Great gamefish. Can be very picky eaters at times. My most successful outings are often when I present small white streamers on fairly light tippets (gotta take some chances around all that cover). If you're not losing a fly or two to cover, you probbaly aren't close enough to get the best quaity fish of the school (not always the biggest, but certainly the strongest). Good luck!
Cheers, Ken H.
