The following is from Brian Stranko, the executive director of California Trout.

The California State Senate and Assembly are poised to deliver the biggest victory for state management of wild and native trout since the establishment of the Wild Trout Program in 1972. And you can play a critical role in the process -- today.

Soon, AB 7 will be on Governor Schwarzenegger's desk, and we ask for your help to encourage the Governor to sign it into law.

Email Governor Schwarzenegger now -- tell him to support wild and native trout in California by signing AB 7 into law!

AB 7 will deliver many needed benefits for wild trout and waterways across California. First, this new legislation will dramatically increase the proportion of fishing license income that the Department of Fish and Game must actually use to fund fish-related programs, halting a long-standing practice of diverting these funds elsewhere.

AB 7 will also triple the Wild/Heritage Trout Program budget and mandate new positions to execute the Wild Trout Program. Finally, the new legislation will establish funding for implementing a new, habitat-oriented State Trout Plan and enhance our severely beleaguered enforcement programs, while also providing funding and new stipulations for responsible hatchery management.

We're so close to achieving a major victory for wild and native trout in California -- but we need your help to push this critical legislation over the finish line.

Send an email to the Governor today, urging him to sign AB 7 as soon as it reaches his desk!

Supporting wild and native trout in California is critical. From a dollars and cents perspective, trout support more than 75,000 jobs and generate more than $3 billion economic benefits to California each year. But they mean much more than just that.

Wild trout are keystone species for California's watersheds. In other words, if trout are removed from our waters, systematic ecosystem problems will occur in their absence. Trout are also remarkably precise indicators of the quality of our waters -- if they are unhealthy, our waters are unhealthy.

Supporting and fostering a healthy wild trout population is critically important to all Californians -- not just anglers and environmentalists. When trout thrive in California, we all thrive.

Make sure Governor Schwarzenegger hears our message -- urge him to sign AB7 and support wild trout in California now!

We have been seeking a well-resourced and effective wild trout program in California for more than 30 years. Now we're on the brink of making it happen.

Please help us deliver a huge victory for wild trout, for our environment, for anglers, for sportsmen, and all Californians today!

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

The California Legislature is about to pass and send to your desk AB 7, critical legislation that will dramatically increase support for wild trout across California, and I urge you to sign it into law.

AB 7 will deliver many needed benefits for wild trout and waterways across California.  First, this new legislation will dramatically increase the proportion of fishing license income that the Department of Fish and Game must actually use to fund fish-related programs, halting a long-standing practice of diverting these funds elsewhere.

AB 7 will also greatly increase the Wild/Heritage Trout Program budget and mandate new positions to execute the Wild Trout Program.  Finally, the new legislation will establish funding for implementing a new, habitat-oriented State Trout Plan and enhance our severely beleaguered enforcement programs, while also providing funding and new stipulations for responsible hatchery management.

Supporting wild and native trout in California is critical.  Trout support more than 75,000 jobs and generate more than $3 billion in economic benefits to California each year. Wild trout are keystone species for California's watersheds.  In other words, if trout are removed from our waters, systematic ecosystem problems will occur in their absence.  Trout are also remarkably precise indicators of the quality of our waters -- if they are unhealthy, our waters are unhealthy.

By signing this legislation, you will certainly enhance your environmental record as governor and strengthen your standing with sportsmen's groups.  But supporting and fostering a healthy wild trout population is critically important to all Californians -- not just anglers and environmentalists.  When trout thrive in California, we all thrive.

I urge you to support California wild trout by signing AB 7 into law as soon as it reaches your desk.  And I ask you to maintain the program's current General Fund allocation until these new measures go into effect in June 2006.

Sincerely

Dean, all the indications is that the gov, although something of an environmentalist, does not fly fish.
