Chip:
I was up in the Caribou Wilderness this September. Decided to take a break from fishing Almanor and just hike to some lakes. The lakes in the Caribou really are quite an easy hike and very pretty. After years of backpacking into the Sierras, Trinity Alps and Marble Mountains, I was surprised how quickly the Hidden Lakes appeared! We took in Hidden Lakes, Long Lake, Beauty and Posey and were done inside 5 hours.
As far as your observation on the path of the satellites is concerned, I think it has to do with the fact that many are set in a polar orbit. They are simply more visible when seen in this particular part of their precession around the planet. You do know they were looking at you, don't you.....

Now if only those satelites could read Chips story they'd stop worrying about weird and suspicious sounds coming from the mountains of California. Chip, have you called the CIA etc. to let 'em know that "everything is ok"?
Everything aside - great story. Just when you think you've at least heard of every region in California .....
