Lake Berryessa has trout on top now

Postby Bill Kiene » Wed Nov 16, 2005 10:49 am

Jim Christensen of Sacramento was on Lake Berryessa this past weekend and saw lots of Rainbow Trout chasing schools of small Threadfin Shad on the surface.

This was once a very popular thing to do in the Fall in Nor Cal on many of our low elevation reservoirs.

Shasta, Oroville, Folsom, Merle Collins are just few that come to mind.

SERIOUSLY BELATED RESPONSE - BUT I LOVE THE TOPIC

Having grown up in Northern California, I miss places like those rolling hills where Berryssa lies. I had many of my first fly fishing experiences on Putah Cr.

So what you're saying is that one could do some nymphing on Putah and then hit the lake for some piscivorous trout? Love it.

There's a great story in that Nor. Cal. magazine from the 70s called ANGLER of the Putah drainage BEFORE the dam. Incredible photos etc. I have lost track of my copy but what a great publication (and article)

Thanks for sharing and do tell if this happens this year ;)

Hi LA River,

Did you go to UC Davis? Lived in this area?

In the Fall (Nov) you could fish Putah Creek and Lake Berryessa too.

We have had those Threadfin Shad planted in many lakes in CA as a food fish for gamefish for about 30 years now. It seems to go in cycles so some years are better than others.

Hi Bill,
I figured I'd wait a few years to respond. Whew. I did not live nor study in Davis but grew up in Walnut Creek. Question: Do you know anyone who has a cache of those old Angler Magazines? Peter Moyle at IC Davis is interested in seeing the issue that featured pre-dam era Putah (as am I). Damn I wish I held onto those!
Best,
Bernard
