Ralph Cutter Hits it out of the Ballpark (again)

Postby beowulfborealis » Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:04 am

Ralph Cutter is really a great contributor to California Fly Fisher. His latest effort is all about the squawfish controversy. It is well researched and really gets to the bottom of what all the fuss is about.

I remember a few years back the evil eye that my female boss would give me (we both worked for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) whenever I refered to those sparkletrout as squawfish. ODF&G had gone the PC route along with AFS and there was no longer such a thingy as a squawfish, just a "northern pikeminnow".

Personally, when I think of squawfish I think of the Pacific Northwest. I get a warm and fuzzy feeling. Heck, those sparkletrout are great on light tackle too.

Thanks for the great article,

-John Beowulf

ps the link for a PDF file of Ives Goddard letter about the orgins of the word "squaw" is here:

Fascinating read (that PDF). Thanks!

As for the fish ... The "Pike Minnow" will always be a Squawfish to me.
Hmmmm but better Pike Minnow than PIKE proper. At leats in California.
