William, It seems surf fishing anyway, is pretty good along the entire coast. There are MANY great resources avaiable to someone wanting to give it a try. Rather than launching into a soliloquy on surf fishing, I'm going to give you some links to follow. It's a blast, by the way, I hope you find wha...

I'd like to see a few photos, Mr. Sharman. I hear the Czech republic is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Nice seeing more San Diegans on this board.

RESULTS

I got the tails, and tied up some flies. they're based on JP's Newport Special, but I've changed to colors I like for SD Bay, and in this case used curly tails. Thanks.

Silicone curly tails

Anyone have a source for silicone curly tails? I'm looking for a decent color selection. I'm hoping for an online source, but if you know a place in San Diego, that'd be good too. Thanks.

SD Bay again. 8/20

I took another friend out on SD Bay this morning. Met Kim at Seaforth in Coronado at 8 am. We headed down to a part of SD Bay known as "Area 51" for some long drifts in various depths, from pretty shallow (around 8 feet) to kind of deep (about 30). When I woke up at 6:30 the wind was coming from the...

I hear you on the small flies. When I posted, I was a little frustrated at some of the tiny fish we had to deal with. For the most part, I stick with flies based on your Newport Special, only with reds, oranges, golds, and rootbeer. I've found those to be very effective in both flies and conventiona...

SD Bay report

I took a new friend out to SD Bay for some Spotted Bay Bass fishing. Here's a link to the report on another (local) board. Thanks.

There's a fella on fliflicker.com that uses one of those. Try posting there, I'm sure you'll get a full review.

Stripping basket technique

I have an LL Bean basket that has cones in the bottom, I did all the mods to it that I think were posted on this site. I have the problem that Richard mentioned. I used to prepare the night before by giving my line a good hand stretch and leaving it in a shoe box loose until I got to the beach, then...

Dying epoxy?

I've used a few epoxy flies in the surf. A couple have done pretty well. I've seen a lot of interesting epoxy flies in the past on this board. I'd like to make an epoxy fly, similar to SD Fly Shop's Perch Candy - at least in shape, but I'd like a rootbeer tint. I bought a fly like this, and it works...

Stripping basket issues

When I was in Baja a few weeks ago, I was getting a lot of knotted line in my basket, which would hit the first stripping guide and everything would stop. This led to a lot of time dealing with tangles and not fishing. My partners were getting many more fish than I, and getting a lot more casts. The...

Coronado

I worked from the rocks in front of the Del south about halfway to Lifeguard Tower 2. I haven't been mobile enough since I ditched my stripping basket. Gotta work on that. I get Earth911 beach reports by email, and usually after a rain, the worst spots are from the border to North Island. My homeboy...

2/17 Surf Perchin' in SD

I haven't posted here in a while. We need more reports on this board. I was able to duck out of work a little early last night (10 pm) so when I got home I gathered my surf gear together and put it by the door. I set my alarm for 5:50 am and after a little Letterman went to bed. I woke up 5 minutes ...

San Quintin

Thanks, David, for your post. It turns out, one of our group had contacted Mr. Kira and brought the book. Here's my report from another site.
